Thankful

We picked up Lucas (pictured) two years ago, just before Thanksgiving. This photo was taken after the first toss of a tennis ball. He appears to be quite thankful for that simple task of playing retriever. We are thankful he was available and have been ever since.

What a year. It finally rained. For that we are thankful. Then came the fires, one literally across the road from Zaca Mesa. Fortunately for Zaca Mesa and our neighbors, the fire was on the flight path of the air tankers and helicopters that were working the Whittier fire in the Santa Ynez Mountains. Within a short period of time, they had the fire under control. Northern California did not fare so well, but they will tell you that they are thankful for the efforts of the first-responders, the fire fighters, and the outpouring of support from all reaches of the globe.

Zaca Mesa will celebrate its 45th year in 2018, quite an accomplishment in the industry. The Cushman family were part owners back then and in 1988 became whole owners. Employees have been connected to Zaca Mesa for over 30 years. Vineyard Manager Ruben Camacho has worked at Zaca Mesa for forty years. Jose Aquiniga and Agustin Robles have worked the cellar for over thirty years. Our club members are the biggest part of our family- and it has grown over the years. We have club members who have been visiting Zaca Mesa for well over thirty years. They celebrate birthdays, engagements, weddings (yes, we do weddings here again), anniversaries, or just to gather with friends and family to celebrate life in a beautiful rural mountain valley setting. Some club members or club member spouses have passed, and each time it’s a tearful phone call with the warm embrace of genuine condolences.

The Cushman family has been with Zaca Mesa for all 45 years through thick and thin. There is no such thing as an easy thing when owning, running, or working in the wine industry. But we make wine, and wine is shared with families and friends and that makes all the ups and downs, the droughts, the downpours, the fires, and the various challenges that Mother Nature throws our way worthwhile. With no challenge there is no story, and just like the most stressed vines, in the end this team produces the most wonderful wine. And that, my friends, is something to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving!
